'Counter ----'
Counter - ing - small-scale -----
Here at the organic eco micro-holding (small smallholding) in the English midlands, the warm/hot weather from June and July continued for ten days or so into August and then changed to cooler showery and breezy weather, making the water sprinkler system then redundant. Now, though, at nearly mid September, sun and warm weather have returned, very nice too, with a pleasant sort of hazy, lazy feel to the days. Later dug potatoes have disappointed as with many in these parts, with blight even in a sunny summer wreaking some havoc (and even in the local heavily sprayed potato fields). Next year, a different strategy - based probably on the fact that the first early variety Pentland Javelin produced some sizeable ware, so maybe early and later plantings of that variety might fare better - ?
The 'revived by nettle juice' onions after onion fly attack (although the latest theory hereabouts is that it could have been the well-known alium leaf miner doing a bit of mining) have morphed into a strong crop of good sized onions, pulled from the ground the latter half of August and currently drying in the paddock glasshouse before storing on ex bread trays in the utility room. The runner beans and tomatoes are yielding nice and steadily and the winter veg - purple sprouting , curly kale and second growth spring cabbage plants - are all 'coming along', the next lot of spring cabbage plants ready to be planted out. Leeks are looking well and strong - fingers crossed that none of the onion-related pests mount an attack. At an allotment ground not too far from here, the growers are putting 'enviromessh'over their crops for protection. .
The extension to the 'Rough Office' in the paddock built over summer is all but complete and attention's moving to the next seasonal phase (variety is a definite 'spice of life' here) of 'maintenance and tidying', plus some wood sawing. The front of the big (3m+ high) hedge has already been trimmed - just about eight hedge sides to go - the solar powered electric hedgecutters do make lightish work of the job - just need a solar-powered system of clearing the trimmimngs away now. Flowers in the 'country cottage' style garden are blooming well, with some having another go due to this later bout of warm/hot weather - they make quite a show.
The new mini-flock (four) of young brown hens have settled in remarkably well in their spacious shady pen, complete with hen house, giving four at the moment smaller eggs a day, (they'll get bigger pretty quickly). They've started to run out into the paddock and orchard from mid-day onwards (after laying time) and already look a picture - they'll make lovely strong looking mature brown birds. After being 'henless' for awhile, they've reminded of the pleasure they can give, tending them, looking at them, and hearing their contented little chucking/clucking 'hen noises'. Against the straw on the ground in their pen, they do look the picture of contentment.
Counter-ing - 'large entities' ----
The term 'counter' culture, might perhaps be in some danger these days of being misinterpreted to mean something more aggresive, but as a culture tends to be driven by those in power, and it's perfectly possible that even a majority of people within that culture have not voted and therefore supported that particular political party, having their own (often 'freerange' - ?) values and standards, may well have to do what they can within the general law of the country, to 'counter' any perceived 'general culture' negative effects on these values, often seemingly lead by 'large entities' (eg. mega profits maximisation)
In the UK, for instance, nowadays, it's been said that the strong focus on personal gain and money making, has by default 'de-valued' social values and issues,( recent paper reports that the Uk government has been charged with making the biggest expenditure cuts in the poorest Uk areas, for instance), which is not then necessarily the best milieu for those, quite possibly many, so-called 'ordinary' people with such values. One of any 'money mania' countering ideas for instance here on the eco micro-holding is to live as environmentally-friendly as is reasonably and sensibly possible whilst also 'economically' gaining from the supply of nearly free, healthy and tasty produce from the veg growing area and from the mini-orchard in the small paddock, plus eggs from the small flock of (freerange, naturally) hens. Although the site here is a self-contained half an acre, such a lifestyle could be easily replicated via a garden plus an allotment (small area of rented ground on which to grow vegetables).
Count on - not ---? - those oligopolistic (i.e. few large powerful firms) energy supplying 'large entities'
After a viewing of a 'heat from air' stand-alone unit the other day, it looks likely that the installation of such a unit will be the next 'eco' project here - on the minimum setting the unit is said to give out 2kw for an input of 400watts, which the solar production set-up here should generally provide - so 'free heat' - can't be too bad. The unit can also function as an air conditioning unit, which could be tres handy in any summer hot weather. From the economics point of view, the £1.4k it costs will give a much better return invested in the 'heat from' air' unit than if invested in, say, bonds, given the rock-bottom low rates of interest available at present, so it's probably all systems go on this one -and one in the eye for those powerful energy companies - there'll no doubt be a bit of 'boot quaking' going on - ??
The summer's building project did begin to pall towards the end - a bit of 'self-push' was needed then, but it's now satisfying to see the largely finished extension to the 'Rough Office' in the paddock, converting it into 'The Retreat'. It's not a bad name for it, as the small paddock and orchard are surrounded by trees and high hedges, giving a good 'quiet haven' type of feel, the main sound source being bird song. The extension, rough built as it is, has given quite a different aspect to the original chalet, now giving 5m * 3m floor space instead of just 2m * 3m, and of course, in true freerange lifstyle mode, it is entirely unique and having used mostly re-cycled spare materials about the place, it has given the satisfaction of 'getting a bargain' - it's cost will still be under £100 with some exterior paint still to get - re-cycling can certainly be a way of countering seemingly ever-increasing costs.
Counter-ing the few -- (oligopolistic) 'large entity' supermarkets ----
The last lot of laying hens here were rescue hens that continued laying for some months, stopped, and then never layed again, not lasting too long either. New here a few days ago are the aforementioned four brown Warren pullets (young hens) which lay brown eggs - small ones so far as they are young birds, but definitely delicious. They have been confined to barracks, which is a spacious shady run with chicken shed, but now they're let out at midday( after laying time) to wander down to the paddock and little orchard, which they enjoy and it's good to see them about the place. They're friendly birds with a fair amount of cheeky character - real freerangers, producing tasty food to boot. The allotment size veg patch supplies quite a bit of seasonal food over the year - there's always veg to pick - which in itself along with the steadily increasing amount of fruit from the young orchard, and now home supplied eggs, can act as something of an effective buffer to rising living costs, (food costs have been predicted to rise fairly sharply over the next few years), and avoid too much of a contribution to those superrmarket mega profits. The plan this winter also is to continue last year's trend of making lots of tasty, chunky soup such as potatoe and leek, all mainly from home-grown 'free' produce.
'Out for the count --- ?
Here in the Uk, many sectors of public employees have a week or two ago gone on strike for a day, unhappy at their wages being held down for the last four years, whilst 'management's' remuneration in terms of pay and bonuses have forged ahead (14% per year has been quoted as average management's pay rises, and one University boss, for instance, recently had a 28% pay rise whilst his 'troops' got just 1%) - not exactly creating the 'level playing field', no matter what form of words are used to rationalise/ justify such disparity - ? The High Pay Unit in the UK has commented that the disparity between 'ordinary' wages and executives pay is now greater than ever and is creating a pervading sense of injustice and unfairness within UK society. Even the CBI, the organisation that represents some of the most powerful in society i.e. highly placed business people, is reportedly condemning the naked use of power for self-interest and promoting the presumably longer-term healthier practice of good, responsible governance.
Perhaps the current UK government's use of the phrase 'The Big Society' didn't mean an all-inclusive society which might have been the inference, but rather a culture to suit and favour the 'big' and powerful, at the expense of the 'small and unpowerful' - ?? One recent letter, for instance, to a national UK paper wondered whether those who gave their lives in two World wars did it to create an 'unequal' society where a minority 'help themselves' to 'big dosh' whilst at the same time keeping so-called ordinary folk 'on the breadline' - witness the rise of food banks, 'difficult' working conditions such as zero hours contracts with no guarantee of money coming in, for instance, and now according to recent press reports, families in the UK with both parents bringing in a wage are now struggling to make ends meet. Maybe a bit of the World War 'homes fit for heroes' approach wouldn't be too bad a thing - ?
Counting on ----
Has the Uk become even more 'a nation of shopkeepers', as the French were wont to remaark disparagingly, with now such an emphasis on profit, wealth, margins and money (money, for instance, the 'end', rather than the 'means' - ?) Large entities such as global businesses often seem to have 'mega profits' as their main goal, and operate to that end. Current conditions in the UK, for instance, could appear to be part of a 'control culture' designed for some to practice authority over others, and even the traditionally self-motivated and self-responsible professional class of staff seem to be no longer trusted to carry out their role, instead being controlled by laid-down procedures, social pressurising (eg. league tables) and penalties - some have argued that the culture is then in effect negatively and penally based. To get positivity, is a level of trust needed, to allow and encourage people to be self-responsible and self-motivated - ?
('Freerange' press publication available now from the books page of this site entitled 'The Human Approach to People Management Works Better in the Long-term - ?' ( covering 'theory y' approach: trust, self-responsibility and motivation, against 'theory X' approach: mistrust, authoritative, 'control' culture)).
In the officially 'happiest' country in the world, Denmark, trust is held to be the most important element in society - the 'oil' of the smooth running engine -. a condition which presumably is not possible in an authoritative, 'exploitative' type of 'control culture' - ? (maybe predictably, for instance, the UK government has now reacted to the industrial action of its public sector workers by stating it would pass legislation to make industrial action harder to take).
'Under the counter ---- '
Awhile back it could have been 'against the cultural trend' to speak out against any perceived excesses or injustices of the current system, and any rebellious thoughts might have had to be kept more clandestinely - one risk manager of a major financial institution lost his job, for instance, for alledgedly drawing attention to the high risk nature of his organisation's activities - i.e. doing his job. The groundswell of opposition seems now to have reached a point where it has sufficient momentum for the detractors not to be dismissed as, say, 'non joiners' ('if you're not with us, you're against us') or 'rubbished' out of existence. Culture watch can always be an interesting and informative exercise - perhaps it may help to be able to do it 'from a distance' - say, behind a hoe or resting in a chair in a paddock surrounded by nature's greenery, birds and suchlike - maybe you could even count on it - ??
