The month of August always seems to be 'the eye of the micro-holding year' here on the eco organic micro-holding (small smallholding) in the UK heartlands. The good broad bean crop has been safely gathered into the freezer and the stalks cut off, and with the furry haulms deposited on the compost heap, which now in early August must be a couple of feet high. Potatoes are yielding steadily and the decision to stick with the Pentland Javelin early variety, which can though apparently also serve as an early maincrop, seems to have paid off, with a lot better crop this year than in the last two/three years. The runner beans (stick beans) are looking good - mysteriously better than a lot hereabouts - ? The maincrop onions got hit with the 'new' attack that is the alium leaf miner fly and looked 'bitter and twisted' for awhile -like the grower -until good ol' nettle juice came to the rescue and there's now the makings of a good crop, to provide home grown onions year round. Lunch often comprises of a veggie stir-fry - nipping out into the veg patch to gather sundry items: broad beans, peas, cabbage, french beans, runner beans, baby carrots and so forth, cut 'em up along with some thin slices of potato and onion, flung then in the woc with a bit of butter, and hey presto, ten minutes later an easy and tasty meal, all apart from the bit of butter, satisfyingly home grown and with good taste levels due to being freshly picked.
Nature at work --- ?
The livestock news is not the best - Mr. (or Mrs.) Fox came along and took three of the four hens, which had become part of the micro-holding scene. Not a great feeling, especially knowing that as their custodians, things had got a little lax and complacent on the security front, letting the poor creatures down. The lesson has been that just because it has't happened (over some thirty plus years) doesn't mean it can't happen, and the place is now like a poultry mini 'Fort Knox'. Their replacements came from a poultry keeper who rears quite a few different breeds, all looking very well, on his smallholding and it was interesting to be able to walk round to see them all.
Golden glow ----'
The countryside hereabouts is now bathed in the 'golden glow' of ripe corn and/or harvested stubbles and straw. It gives a sort of relaxed 'harvest safely gathered in' feel which also seems to help the feeling that August is a bit of a 'break' time. The countryside on a recent break to west Wales -this time mainly grass, was also resplendent, with the route into the Welsh town of Machynlleth (Mac-hunk-leth) particularly so. One sight seen walking along the harbour of a seaside town, turned heads and brought a smile to every face - this little guy's back legs had stopped working, but it hadn't stopped him.
'Eco worriers ----'
The eco friendly organic way of crop production started here at the micro-holding some thirty plus years ago as a means of being 'eco-nomic', money being tight back then. Probably there must have also been a vestige of the feeling that working in and with nature 'felt right', but economics was the key driving force. Then, maybe, the principles and 'mechanics' of organic growing became interesting and presented something of a challenge. On an organic farm, for instance, choosing 'organic' (without the use of chemicals) growing then to quite an extent influences farm policy. So, for instance, on a, say, 200 ha's farm using chemicals, 200 ha's of wheat could technically be grown, whereas an organic sysyem would be limited to 25% of that level to facilitate a needed rotation of crops to ensure on-going longer-term soil fertility (i.e. not being able to apply chemical fertilisers). The organic rotation could well look pretty similar to traditional rotations used (in the UK) before the advent of 'chemical farming', of which the Norfolk four-course rotation would be the best known. The plan was to have a mix of 'exhaustive' crops (taking from the land) and 'restorative' crops (putting back into the land). Each phase of the rotation lasts a year and the Norfolk yearly cycle is then :
yr.1: wheat, yr. 2: roots/fallow, yr.3: barley/oats, yr. 4: clover ley (often with grass)
The other likely 'organic system effect' is that the farm system then needs to be 'mixed' which means that livestock as well as crops would feature. The livestock would make use of the clover/grass 'restorative' cycle (clover's a legume which extracts nitrogen from the atmosphere and then 'fixes' it in the soil, so fertilising it), and of course the system's waste - the dung of the livestock - is then also part of the 'restorative' cycle, being applied to the land in year 2, which is also the 'land cleaning' year courtesy of the cultivations needed for roots (potatoes, swedes, turnips, mangolds, fodder beet etc.) Surely a growing system such as organic, which builds in on-going soil fertility as well as providing healthy produce, must be of some (considerable?) merit - ? One recently reported study identified a longer-term soil erosion problem in the east of England, of which non-mixed monoculture chemical farming methods were considered to be part of the problem.
Small-scale organics ----
Just as the longer-term needs of the organic system on the farm limit the amount of, say, wheat that can be produced, so the same applies to the smaller organic application as is the one here at the micro-holding, even though in this case the clover/grass cycle is missing. Potatoes, for instance, need to be grown only one year in four to avoid soil disease build-up, and to avoid over-exhausting the soil over time. To compensate for the missing clover/grass cycle, more legumes, in this case peas and beans, are grown, as well as some 'green manuring' (a crop, such as clover or rye, specifically grown after a maincrop to be then 'dug in' to the soil). So the micro-holding 'small organic application' rotation cycle looks something like:
yr.1.: potatoes, yr. 2: legumes yr.3 : onions yr. 4 : roots (swedes, turnips, beetroot, mangolds etc)
Less demanding crops like lettuce, radish, spring onions etc are fitted in 'here and there'. The other major soil fertilising element is of course the compost, which by the time it's put on top of the soil (every other year) is just like a 'high-rich' soil itself (here it's two year's old by the time it's used). It seems to have some sense to use the waste of the system to then turn into a valuable asset i.e. organic fertiliser . Not just the waste from the veg itself but also that of waste vegetation from the whole area of land itself - so material such as nettles and hedge cuttings, for instance are used on the compost heap, as well as wasted flowers and plants. There is a relatively small amount of recyclable waste from the chickens pen - the bedding from the pen is cleared out periodically and put on its own heap, to then rot down over time to contribute some more fertility and organic matter to the soil. Oh, and of course not forgetting the bi-annual layer of woodash the soil gets, which seems to have done sterling work in not only adding to soil fertility - it's a potash fertilser - but also significantly seemingly reducing soil problems such as club root, cabbage root fly and onion white rot.
On going -----
Basically then, the organic method, excellent for those of the 'working with nature' bent, needs the longer-term view and planning, but then is rewarded with a system which 'builds-in' on-going fertility of the soil as it operates. Organic reservationists might well argue that yields in the organic system are likely to be lower than via a chemical-based growing system, to be countered though by the argument that 'quantity' is not everything - potato yield can be increased by irrigation, for instance - but that quality, in terms of taste, can then tend to decline. In terms of input /output efficiency, in spite of potentially lowered outputs, the organic system may yet win due to the non importation of inputs (egs. sprays, chemical fertilisers) - ?
'Organically natural ----- ?'
Here in the UK, probably as elsewhere, the term 'organically' can now have the wider meaning of 'naturally', with the undertone that things are proceeding along 'partnership with nature' lines, which isn't always immediately apparent. Take the phrase 'organic business growth', or businesses being grown 'organically', for instance. The wider indication and meaning is that business growth is not being 'forced', that the business is being allowed to develop at a natural pace. In modern 'fast-pace' times. of course, such a notion may be tricky on a couple of counts. Firstly, there seems to be great accent on 'business growth', the very force of which can tend to promote the 'hurry, hurry' mode, which can in turn seem to lead to the 'must be big' mindset. Modern culture generally seems to focus on 'big' - big profits, big business scale, big pots of dosh, big business growth, big power - maybe not too surprising with so many big outfits around promoting (eg. via a 'big is best', 'economies of scale' message) a world in their image - maybe then not too much room for 'small'- ? Which then leads to the second difficulty, which is that if 'small' is out of fashion, infra dig even, and 'developing/growing organically' can mean starting from small beginnings, then developing at a slower 'smaller' pace would be to go against the trend, so maybe not too much uptake - ? Interesting to know though, how many of today's giant concerns, actually did 'start small' - ? Certainly here in the UK, many rural businesses in the past started 'small' and proceeded 'organically'.
Organics in business ----- ?
From a business point of view, starting small has some 'organic' advantages. Not too much capital is put at risk, and if setbacks occur (as they probably will), they can be more easily overcome. Further, the 'starting small' organic approach gives opportunity to test the market, and equally important, to learn about the market on the onward developing business journey. Psychologically, too, it might well suit individuals to operate initially at a 'lower' level, and then grow themselves along the way alongside the development of their business . Does modern culture put, for instance, too much pressure on people too early in the 'rush to big' type of conditioning it offers - ? At times it seems as if 'perfection' should just sort of 'materialise' - there maybe doesn't seem to be enough recognition of the 'input' needed to get the 'output' - ? This could be a modern manifestation of the old 'pound and a half of flesh' syndrome -people in too much of a hurry and wanting too much at the same time - ? Some psychologial research recently reported indicates that a too 'wanting' and rushed approach (i.e. to 'perfection' -the desired result) tends to be counter-productive, and actually leads to poorer overall longer-term performance and 'burnout'. It seems though that quite a few modern workplaces are geared up to such a fast-pace' approach, so will the poorer results then come through in the longer-term - ? A further potential difficulty could be that if the focus is mainly 'short-term', as some have said about the modern culture approach, then longer-term view and potential effects get shorter shrift -?
Organic living ----- ?
One young couple built themselves an organic eco house - sort of a 'hobbit' house - for not too much money - they like many others could not afford the high cheap -money- driven UK property prices. They fell foul of the planners and had a long three year struggle to save their house, helped by considerable public support and finally winning their case. Quite a struggle, though, to sort an innovative housing solution, even in such 'innovative' times - ?
Interesting thoughts from the relative un-rush pace here on the organic eco micro-holding, 'doing a bit and leaving a bit', as they say. Doing a bit here, doing a bit there, having a cuppa and a sit down, then doing a bit here again ---- surprising still how much gets done ----. Maybe that old west Dorset farmer had something :
'Tek yer time , me boyo, tek yer time ----- '.
And as Walter Hagen, a famous golfer in olden times, was wont to say:
' ---- and don't forget to smell the roses along the way ---- '
And, mysteriously, sometimes taking it steadier can produce timely (and more sustainable - ?) results - ?
